Statement on Governor Walz’s final State of the State Address

Following Governor Tim Walz’s final State of the State Address, Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernie Burnham made the following statement reflecting on the Governor’s office:
“Over the past seven and a half years, Governor Walz worked closely with working Minnesotans, their unions, and advocates to set Minnesota on a path to become the best state for working people.
“Under Governor Walz’s leadership, working Minnesotans won stronger protections against wage theft, expanded union rights, safer workplaces, more union jobs, better funded schools, and the freedom to take paid family and medical leave to care for ourselves and the people we love.
“Working people know that it’s better in a union, but Governor Walz’s leadership shows that it’s also better for everyone when we elect qualified union member candidates like him to public office.
“Minnesotans have gone through a lot these past years – from the COVID-19 pandemic to George Floyd’s murder, political violence, and ICE’s occupation. During these crises, Governor Walz led with resolve, empathy, and strength while always believing in Minnesotans’ kindness, decency, and resilience. We thank him for his leadership.”
